A 100% extra-fine merino worsted yarn from Zegna Baruffa in the Biella district — fine enough to wear next to the skin, even enough to hold a clean, tailored line.
What it is
This is Zegna Baruffa’s extra-fine merino: 100% pure new wool (WV), worsted-spun to a 2/30 count. Worsted spinning combs the fibres parallel and twists them tightly, giving a smooth, fine, strong yarn that holds a crisp surface — the opposite of a lofted woollen-spun thread. “Extra-fine” refers to the fibre diameter: the finer the micron, the softer and less prickly the wool against the skin. It is the family of yarn Baruffa built its name on, the same lineage as its Cashwool®.
Why we chose it
A fine-gauge V-neck or crewneck lives or dies on the yarn. It has to be soft enough to wear on bare skin, fine enough to knit a clean flat face, and stable enough to keep its shape through repeated wear and washing. Extra-fine merino does all three, and Baruffa’s is spun evenly enough that the knit reads as tailored rather than casual. Knitted on a 12–14 gauge fully-fashioned flat machine and finished to a cotton count of 21–24–27, it gives the Perfect knitwear its clean line and next-to-skin softness.
