Why we chose them
Founded in Leeds in 1904, C.F. Stead is one of England's oldest surviving tanneries and is widely regarded as the world's leading specialist in suede. More than a century later it still operates from the historic Sheepscar Tannery, parts of which date to 1823. While much of Britain's leather industry disappeared or moved overseas, Stead remained independent and kept manufacturing in Leeds — preserving the knowledge, techniques and craftsmanship that have made it the benchmark for premium suede.
Unlike most tanneries, where suede is one article among many, Stead built its reputation around mastering it. Every stage — from selecting premium European hides to tanning, dyeing and finishing — is focused on suede with exceptional density, consistency and longevity, known for a tight, resilient nap, rich colour and the ability to age gracefully rather than wear to a polished shine. The tannery refuses to maximise yield at the expense of quality, evaluating and processing each hide individually.
Over the decades Stead has developed some of the industry's most respected articles — Janus, Repello, Bronto, Super Buck, Rough-Out and Kudu — and pioneered the tanning of antelope-family skins. It combines traditional craft with modern quality control, running its own testing laboratory and holding Leather Working Group membership with independent audits. Today it supplies many of the world's finest footwear and leather-goods makers, who often name Stead because the leather itself has become a mark of quality.
