Chromexcel

Individual material

Chromexcel

Chromexcel (often abbreviated as CXL) is one of Horween’s signature leathers, highly regarded in the leather goods industry worldwide and recognized for its "pull-up effect."

Made by
Horween Leather Company

What it is

Horween Chromexcel follows a historic recipe developed in-house over a century ago; traditional methods have changed little since the early 1900s. Producing Chromexcel involves multiple hand-applied stages and extended drum times, which makes it slower and more artisan-driven than many mass-produced leathers. Horween’s expertise ensures consistent temper (softness and firmness) and color uniformity, essential for high-quality production runs.

Full-grain leather skins are carefully selected and then undergo an in-house Horween chrome-tanning process to enhance water resistance and durability. The skins are then re-tanned to imbue them with unique properties, such as a rich wax and oil content. After regular wear, minor scuffs can be gently worked out by hand massage and natural heat to bring the oils back to the surface and recondition the leather naturally. This property means the leather is "self-conditioning," which is quite unique.

Because Chromexcel is a full-grain leather, it is not split to a uniform thickness like many other industrial leathers. Drum-tanned whole, the hide thickness is consistent throughout the skin and consequently chosen and sorted by range. Larger, thicker cuts are selected for heavy goods; lighter areas are ideal for garments and small goods.

Horween Chromexcel leather is known for its original “pull-up” quality, meaning the color lightens when stretched, revealing depth and character. It softens relatively quickly with wear while maintaining the durability that results from the combination tanning process. Enthusiasts often prize this transformation that takes place slowly over time as the leather patinas with use and exposure.

Horween says Chromexcel passes through at least 89 individual processes and all five floors of its Chicago tannery. That's extraordinary for a bovine footwear leather and explains why Chromexcel is a tannage, not simply a finish applied to ordinary leather. It also sacrifices yield for feel. Chromexcel is traditionally air dried, during which Horween says a hide can shrink by roughly 25%. That's economically inefficient, but Horween deliberately accepts this loss because air drying produces a fuller, rounder hand with more pliability and some natural stretch.

Why we chose it

Chromexcel brings our products to life as they patina and become individualized with wear, and the “pull-up effect” becomes increasingly visible. It breaks in rather than merely breaking down. Scuffs become part of the leather's appearance, thanks to the aniline finish, allowing time and use to develop natural variations while the leather remains “self-conditioning” and works out surface scratches, rather than being covered beneath an opaque pigment coating.

Chromexcel feels substantial without necessarily being stiff, giving our items a characteristically dense, waxy, and almost buttery hand because Horween practices genuine hot stuffing, not merely oiling. They tumble the leather in heated drums with fats, oils, and waxes that are solid at room temperature, without the water and emulsifiers used in conventional fat-liquoring. Horween cites ingredients such as food-grade beef tallow and cosmetic-grade beeswax, as the objective is to deeply nourish the fibre structure. This laborious process noticeably improves durability, water resistance, richness, and flexibility, and it also encourages the “pull-up effect,” which has a great impact on our Café Racer Jacket in particular.

Most luxury calfskin sneakers are sold on pristine uniformity, as they are on the day they’re unwrapped from a box. Chromexcel goes in the opposite direction: the full-aniline finish lets the underlying grain on our SF-01 and Goodyear sneakers remain visible and subtly change with wear as the upper repeatedly flexes across the vamp, while still retaining enough substance to hold its original shape. Consistent movement gently displaces the oils and waxes in the leather, creating the characteristic lighter areas and desired “pull-up effect.” It also gives the upper more body and structure than conventional soft chrome-tanned leather, without making it rigid.

Importantly, for our Goodyear SF-01 Sneakers (which feature a modified Goodyear pattern that attaches the leather upper in a way that protects the leather and removes the need for glue when attaching the sole), it can be made cementable. Meaning Horween can formulate the leather for adhesive-based footwear construction rather than assuming every CXL article will behave identically in production.
