Vicuña

Vicuña is the rarest and most precious of the world's noble animal fibres. It doen't come from farmed herds but from wild vicuña that roam the high Andes, protected under CITES and sheared only in strict, regulated round-ups, which limits global production to just a few thousand kilograms a year. This places it at the very summit of the luxury textile market. The fibre is extraordinarily fine, finer than the best cashmere, naturally a warm camel-gold, and usually left undyed to preserve its purity. Its hand is unmistakable: impossibly soft, feather-light and exceptionally warm.

Piacenza has worked with vicuña longer than almost anyone. Sourcing and processing the world's rarest fibres is central to the house's identity. Members of the Piacenza family travelled through Asia, the Middle East and the Himalayas in the late 19th and early 20th centuries in search of new fibres to bring back to Biella, and vicuña sits at the top of that tradition. The mill understands the fibre before it becomes yarn or cloth and treats it accordingly. It is worked gently and spun with the care such a scarce material demands, so nothing of its fineness is lost.

What sets Piacenza's vicuña apart is finishing. The mill is famous for preserving traditional techniques; most notably, raising the surface with natural teasels rather than aggressive mechanical brushing, which coaxes out vicuña's loft and soft halo without damaging it. Finished in Biella, where the soft water is long cited as critical to handling noble fibres, the result prioritises "nobility": softness balanced with durability, elasticity, recovery and shape retention, so a vicuña piece feels sublime and lasts.
