Japanese Acetate

Individual material

Japanese Acetate

Japanese Acetate is more than a decoration or pattern applied to a pair of frames. It is the frame itself, meaning it is the decoration or pattern that you see at first glance.

Made by
Takiron Rowland

What it is

Founded in 1969, Takiron Rowland remains Japan's only dedicated acetate sheet manufacturer; a vital cog in the global eyewear machine. Frame makers and eyewear brands don’t typically manufacture acetate themselves. Rather, they purchase sheets from specialists, meaning the acetate they use quite literally makes the finished product. This makes a heavy-hitter like Takiron Rowland a titan in the eyewear industry.

Why we chose it

Many frame makers describe Takiron as enabling thinner, more precise frame construction because the material is comparatively rigid and less prone to deformation. For enthusiasts, "Takiron acetate" functions almost like a quality signal. It tells you the maker cared enough to source one of the industry's most respected materials before production even began.

Japanese Acetate responds exceptionally well to light pressure and heat, designed to gradually warm and mould to the shape of someone’s face over time. They will only get more comfortable the more they are worn.
