Horween Leather Company

Horween Leather Company is one of the oldest continuously operating leather tanneries in the United States. It was founded in 1905 by Isadore Horween and is still run by the family. Most American tanneries closed or moved overseas decades ago, but Horween stands alone by remaining local and independent, which gives them tight control over quality.

They are one of the few remaining tanneries in the world that still produces leather entirely in-house using time-intensive, traditional methods. Most modern leather is produced quickly using highly automated systems, but Horween intentionally does the opposite. Their approach prioritizes consistency, material integrity, and patience over speed or scale. They produce leathers whose performance and character reflect over a century of accumulated knowledge and discipline. Few tanneries still use true hot-stuffing because it's slower and messier, but it's central to Horween's character. Most competitors outsource one or more of these intricate tanning steps.

Horween has an industry-wide reputation for setting the benchmark for leathers they produce; an international supplier for premium footwear, leather goods, and sporting equipment. Chromexcel and Horween Shell Cordovan are two of their specialties, and they are also the exclusive leather supplier for National Football League (NFL) game footballs.

Much of what distinguishes Horween from modern tanneries is the extent to which their process remains manual. Oils and waxes are hand-curried into each hide. Dyeing and staining are done by hand rather than machine-sprayed. Shell cordovan membranes are shaved to their final thickness by a craftsman working each piece individually — there is no machine setting for this, just feel and experience accumulated over decades. The glazing process uses glass rods rolled by hand across the surface to compact the fibres and produce a dense, glossy finish without any artificial top coating. Individual hides are graded by eye. Vegetable tanning runs six months, pit by pit. These aren't ceremonial holdovers — they're the reason the leather performs the way it does. Most competitors have automated or outsourced one or more of these steps. Horween does all of them, in the same Chicago facility they've occupied for over a century.
