Why we chose them
Conceria Opera is one of the most focused suede specialists in Italy's historic Tuscan leather district. Where many tanneries treat suede as a side category, Opera has built its entire identity around it — premium split suedes and reversed leathers, with splits carefully chosen for their excellent cutting yield and their suitability for fine footwear. Every rough skin is selected and pre-graded before tanning begins, so each lot arrives already uniform in character. That discipline at the selection stage, long before a hide takes colour, is the foundation of the consistency the tannery is known for.
The company was established in 2010 in Santa Croce sull'Arno, at the centre of the Comprensorio del Cuoio, where tanning has been practised for generations. It is the expression of a family tradition going back more than 30 years, led today by Gabriele Di Sandro and built on the foundation of his father Renato's tannery — young energy supported by long-established expertise. High-quality suede is deceptively difficult to produce consistently: the nap must be uniform, colour must penetrate evenly, the leather must stay supple without going floppy, and runs must match from batch to batch. Opera became known for solving these problems at scale, earning a strong reputation among luxury footwear makers, watch-strap makers, handbag producers, and leather artisans who need premium suede rather than commodity suede.
What truly sets Opera apart is its colour. The tannery dyes its suede entirely in-barrel using aniline dyes, achieving precise, even and repeatable tones with no surface finishing and nothing outsourced. Where most suede passes through a finishing or spray stage that can flatten the leather or falsify its appearance, Opera lets colour settle within the fibre, so the material keeps its true, open nap and its supple, natural hand. The depth of this work is most visible in the Opera Legacy stock programme, which keeps a complete range of 266 colours available from stock at any time. Opera is a certified member of the Leather Working Group, holding its highest Gold rating continuously since 2019.
