Shell Cordovan

Horween Shell Cordovan is made from the fibrous membrane — the "shell" — found beneath the hide on the rump of a horse, with only two shells per animal, which makes it scarce and costly. Unlike standard hides it does not crease; it ripples and rolls as it flexes with wear. Horween tans it by a centuries-old in-house recipe: pure vegetable tanning in pits with tree-bark extract over at least six months, then each shell is hot-stuffed, hand-shaved, hand-dyed and hand-glazed, with glass rods hand-rolled across the surface to compact the fibres and create the signature sheen.

Horween Shell Cordovan is rare, effectively impossible to mass-produce and widely considered the benchmark — properly referenced by both tannery and name. It is exceptionally durable and develops a sought-after glassy patina with age and use, forming deep rolls rather than the creases inherent to cow leather.

Because shells are naturally varied and hand-finished, Horween doesn't quote a single machine-split thickness; pieces generally run ~3–4 oz (1.2–1.8 mm) at the centre, tapering toward the edges. We use it where we want a material that lasts for decades and only improves with wear.
