Why we chose them
Cariaggi Lanificio S.p.A. is an Italian luxury spinning mill in the Marche Apennines, founded in 1958. For decades it has honed a reputation for high-end cashmere and other fine natural fibres, supplying premium yarns internationally. It has become strategically important enough that Chanel and Brunello Cucinelli each took a 24.5% stake while the Cariaggi family retained control — a classic move to secure the very best raw material and know-how, and a strong signal of the mill's standing.
Cariaggi is built around cashmere excellence and works with a portfolio of very fine fibres, including rare vicuña. It separates craft and engineering into two families: carded yarns, built for volume, softness, lightness and a signature mélange look, and combed yarns, engineered for fineness and a "second-skin" feel with very even, clean colour and a sleek handle. For carded yarns it stock-dyes fibre first and then blends for timeless mélange effects — a high-skill area where uniformity and repeatability are hard to achieve at luxury standards.
The mill uses customised technology to bring out cashmere's qualities, combining industrial precision with Italian craft to control handfeel, hairiness, pilling, consistency and colour. Sustainability is product-relevant rather than cosmetic — its Systema Naturae line revives traditional plant-based dyeing — and it holds a stack of certifications aligned with luxury sourcing, including the Responsible Wool Standard, the Good Cashmere Standard, GOTS and ISO 14001/45001.
