Named after Abebe Bikila, the famed Ethiopian runner who won the 1960 Olympic Marathon barefoot, the Abebe in Black Tortoise is cut from a single sheet of Japanese acetate by Takiron Rowland in a deep, dark tortoiseshell where flecks of amber and honey break through a predominantly black base — richer and moodier than our classic Tortoise, with a depth that reveals itself in the light. The squared lenses and strong bridge lines suit rounder faces particularly well. Each pair is shaped in Sabae, Japan over six weeks and more than 200 manual processes.
