In our quest to offer the ultimate classics, we would be remiss not to try our hand at one of the most iconic silhouettes in sneaker history - The Germany Army Trainer or GAT. Revived in the 70s by Belgian designer Margiela, the orgins of the GAT aren't entirely clear and covers ground including feuding brothers ( in Adidas and Puma) and a lucrative contract for a new type of sneaker for the West German Army or Bundeswehr.
The Archibald GAT is a wonderful representation of what we do. Take something simple with an iconic history and ask the most skilled artisans to make it from the best materials... and then sell it for an incredibly disruptive price. The GAT upper has been meticulously handcut and stitched by master shoemakers in Corridonia, Italy using some of the finest purpose-tested Italian calfskin and vegetable-tanned suedes before being stitched to a uniquely flexible and comfortable Lactae Hevea sole using a strobel (or "sacchetto") construction. Uncompromising, excellence...
##Handcrafted in Italy
Located in Corridonia, Italy is a small family owned and operated atelier that has been making exceptional footwear with a focus on quality and construction since 1905. Excellence in shoemaking has been an obsession and never-ending quest that has spanned three generations of this family. As skills are passed from generation to generation there is an insistence to remain in-touch with developments in technology to ensure that both worlds, old and new are always respected in order to achieve the highest quality, most comfortable and longest lasting purpose built shoes. Currently led by the granddaughter of the founder, it was clear from our first interaction that this team of masters fully understood our raison d'etre at Archibald and relished an opportunity to work with us and allow more people to experience the difference their expertise and craft can make in terms of end-product.
##A supremely soft, specialist purpose-fit locally sourced Italian calfskin and vegetable-tanned suede are used together to form the unlined upper which is then stitched to a Lactae Hevea sole.
The calfskin promises a unique blend of comfort, protection and longevity from the moment you wear them. The softer, unlined leather acclimates to your foot almost immediately and provides an unparalleled level of comfort and quality that one would expect from a multipurpose utility sneaker such as this. The French-made Lactae Hevea soles are outstandingly comfortable thanks to the microstructure of tiny air bubbles that form as the sole is made from the virgin hevea milk - a subtle alchemy of tradition and modernity.
There is no shortage of iterations of the GAT available at every price point, but the iconic piece excels when imagined by a true artisan.
The iconic silhouette really comes into it's own as a wardrobe staple when re-imagined by a master shoemaker who insists to only bring it to life using the finest materials. The GAT is a style that has defied trends and become emblematic as a classic, comfortable and casual piece so it only makes sense that it is made with quality, lasting wear and comfort prioritised!
