Why we chose them
More than a century later, C.F. Stead continues to operate from the historic Sheepscar Tannery, where generations of leather have been produced and refined. While much of Britain's leather industry disappeared or moved production overseas, Stead remained independent and continued manufacturing in Leeds. That continuity has allowed the tannery to preserve the knowledge, techniques, and craftsmanship that have made it the benchmark for premium suede.
Unlike most tanneries, where suede is simply one article among many, Stead built its reputation around mastering it. Every stage of production, from selecting premium European hides to tanning, dyeing, and finishing, is focused on producing suede with exceptional density, consistency, and longevity. The result is leather known for its tight, resilient nap, rich color, and ability to age gracefully rather than becoming smooth or glossy through wear.
One of Stead's defining characteristics is its refusal to maximize yield at the expense of quality. Each hide is evaluated individually and processed according to its characteristics, allowing the tannery to achieve an exceptional level of consistency while preserving the leather's natural qualities. The company continues to combine traditional craftsmanship with modern quality control, operating its own testing laboratory and maintaining independently audited environmental and manufacturing standards.
Over the decades, C.F. Stead has developed some of the industry's most respected leather articles, including Janus, Repello, Bronto, Super Buck, Rough-Out, and Kudu. Janus has become the benchmark for luxury calf suede, prized for its remarkably fine nap and elegant appearance. Repello combines a soft hand with excellent water resistance, while Kudu embraces the natural markings of wild antelope hides, making every skin visually unique. Today, C.F. Stead supplies many of the world's finest footwear and leather goods manufacturers. Its leathers are regularly chosen by renowned English, European, American, and Japanese makers, many of whom proudly identify Stead by name because the leather itself has become a recognized mark of quality.
Stead’s history tracks the story of English leather itself. Founder Charles F. Stead trained as an apprentice at Thomas Wright & Co. before setting up on his own near Leeds city center, then taking over Sheepscar Tannery, parts of which date to 1823. The Meanwood Valley around it was once home to many tanneries, all drawn by the soft water of Meanwood Beck. Early production centered on sheepskin for bookbinding, chamois and “fancy” leathers; from the 1940s the company moved decisively into the modern suede leathers on which its reputation now rests. It later supplied Dr. Martens with its Waxy Commander and Repello leathers, was awarded the Queen’s Award for Export in the late 1990s, and from the 2000s pioneered the tanning of antelope-family skins, beginning with Kudu.
Today, as brands renew their focus on the quality and provenance of their materials, Stead has strengthened its position as the pre-eminent supplier of suede to top-grade shoe and bag manufacturers across Europe, the United States and Japan.
