Badalassi Carlo

A Tuscan tannery in the Santa Croce leather district, specialising in vegetable-tanned "living" leather that ages and develops character rather than staying uniform.

Place
Santa Croce sull'Arno, Italy

Why we chose them

Badalassi Carlo lives in a very specific corner of the world. Based in Ponte a Egola, near San Miniato, it’s found in one of the most historic Tuscan centres of Italian leather production. Their reputation comes from preserving a distinctly Tuscan style of vegetable-tanned leather that prioritizes character, aging, and feel over uniformity. They specialize in “living” leather. Many luxury brands aim for consistency, but this tannery often embraces the opposite, focusing on natural rather than artificial texture. It goes in the opposite direction from consistency across hides. A Badalassi product rarely looks the same after a year as it did on day one, which is an intentional characteristic of their leather.

Instead of producing every category, Badalassi focuses on traditional vegetable-tanned vacchetta, where the hide's character remains fully exposed. The tannery has worked with vacchetta for more than forty years and belongs to the Consorzio Vera Pelle Italiana Conciata al Vegetale, the Genuine Italian Vegetable-Tanned Leather Consortium. The consortium’s single goal is to preserve the region's vegetable-tanning tradition.

Simone Remi, Badalassi’s owner and director, once explained their philosophy rather succinctly: “Our company doesn't make fashion; it has an unmistakable style.”

Vegetable tanning differs fundamentally from leather production focused on consistency and surface perfection, which is often achieved artificially. Vegetable tannins derived from plant material transform the hide slowly and leave it extremely receptive to oils, waxes, handling, light and time. These unique characteristics aren’t sealed or protected; they are left open to age and change over time. That is the beauty of natural, veg-tanned leather.

Badalassi specialises in full-grain, aniline leathers. These are hides with natural character that remain highlighted in the finished material. Minerva, Minerva Box, and Pueblo, are the tannery's main articles that have developed an international following. They’re all rich in colour, with substantial hand, natural surface variations, and develop pronounced patinas over time. They deliberately retain evidence of their natural origin, highlighted in creases, grain variations, and differences in texture from hide to hide.

This is why it’s known as “living” leather that tells its own story as it develops over time. Oils migrate through the hide. Touch and wear create a polished lustre. Scratches and handling gradually become part of the patina you can see and quite literally touch. Sunlight and the environment affect the original colour as it deepens, or perhaps lightens, but it begins to change. It’s a natural beauty that really takes on a life of its own.
