Horween Leather Company

Horween Leather Company is one of the oldest, continuously operating leather tanneries in the United States. It is a testament to the importance of provenance.

Place
Chicago, USA

Why we chose them

Founded in Chicago in 1905 by Isidore Horween, Horween Leather Company has spent more than 120 years making leather. But unlike most of its peers in this booming, modern industry, it still takes its time. It’s a tannery that stakes its reputation not just on proprietary recipes carried across five generations of family ownership, but on unhurried, slow processes that are often economically inefficient but yield far superior results.

The ethos established by its founder is still honoured: that the best hides, oils, dyes, and finishes should be chosen first, the best drying practices applied, and the economics dealt with afterward. That philosophy sounds romantic until you see what it means in practice. Horween is one of only a handful of American tanneries that still select hides from their raw, cured state, and take them all the way through to finished leather. Its proprietary formulas are developed and produced at its Chicago tannery, giving the company absolute control over the transformation that occurs in each skin, rather than buying them partially processed or outsourcing the difficult stages. Tanning, retanning, dyeing, stuffing, drying, and finishing are not separate supply chains. They’re parts of the same process, performed under one roof, by people whose ability to judge leather remains as critically important, sometimes even more, than the machinery used.

Human control is important at Horween. Every hide they encounter is different. Thickness changes, as does the grain. Scars and imperfections exist. Natural tanning extracts and pigments behave differently from batch to batch. Horween's answer has never been to engineer all of that variation out with heavy, automated correction and lacquered finishes.

Chromexcel is perhaps the best example of a treatment, while Shell Cordovan stands out as a raw material in how it's handled. And Horween embraces inefficiency to produce both. Both were born of utilitarian need rather than designed for a luxury market or aesthetic. They were conceived solely for performance and function: the first during the industrial era, built to last, and the second used only to sharpen razor blades at first. The history behind each is fascinating because it drives home the point that Horween didn't initially focus on the beauty of what they produced, but on creating leathers that met a societal need and were judged by those standards alone. And yet, these leathers became something so incredible during that process, in their own time and right, that they transitioned from the underappreciated and ordinary to become something extraordinary, revered within the world of leathers and the luxury sector alike.

The luxury came from making those materials incredibly well. It also explains why Horween occupies an unusual position today. Chromexcel® and Horween Genuine Shell Cordovan® are both specified by tannery and name. Saying that something is made from “pull-up” leather or Shell Cordovan isn't the same thing. Horween's particular recipes, processes, and finishing methods have accumulated enough history to become globally renowned. Their provenance itself is important. More technologically advanced ways to make leather exist, as well as faster ones. There are certainly cheaper ways.

Horween has survived for more than a century because it built its business around the parts of tanning that industrialization struggles to commoditize: proprietary recipes, extraordinary raw materials, trained eyes, skilled hands, time, and the accumulated judgment to know when something is right. The machinery matters. The chemistry behind each recipe matters. But after five generations, the real assets inside the Horween tannery are knowledge and patience. The knowledge of what happens when you change an oil, shorten a tannage cycle, accelerate the drying process, shave a shell a little too much, or decide that something is simply "good enough."
